Valentines day, its here. And I am not looking. Do you look forward to it? Or wish it would go away. I wish it would go away. This possibly makes me sound like a jaded lover. I am in fact not a jaded lover. I am someone who believes that love should be celebrated every day. But not forced love. I think Valentines day is forced.
Flowers on a Monday
Your lover should bring you flowers on a random Monday because of love. Not because of a calendar date. Likewise, there should be dates to a nice restaurant because you enjoy going to a nice restaurant. Chocolates? Yeah. Chocolates should be every day. I don’t need a special day on the calendar to buy, eat, or indulge in chocolate.

How about the people who do not have a lover for the 14th of February? They feel like they are missing out on all the love hubbub. All they are missing out on is overpriced meals at a packed restaurant.
It is a “forced” holiday. I do not want this to be why my partner recognizes our love and relationship. Sometimes it is fun to write a little poem or bake chocolate cupcakes. Regardless, it shouldn’t be forced. There shouldn’t be pressure to make something romantic and heartfelt.
Growing up my mom always made sure we had a valentine card or poem and a little treat, so I haven’t been without the tradition, it has been a celebrated day in my life. Therefore, that goes to say that this isn’t a learned behavior from a jaded mother.
Quite possibly, this is just me. Guess you could call me a realist. It is my take on the world around me. Fingers can’t be pointed at a mother’s lack of attention or a lover who did me wrong, none of those things have fallen into my lap.
Middle school love
In middle and high school the band would sell carnations for $1 and then deliver them on Valentine’s Day to your proposed valentine. This was more of a popularity contest than a show of love. Whereas, what do you expect? Middle school – high school love costs $1.
I got suckered in at Trader Joes and bought these dog treats for my pups. Look at me. Here I am acting as if I don’t care about the day but I bought the dogs special treats. Those guys don’t even read. Or they are not letting on that they do.

A message to you
If Valentine’s Day is something you and your person celebrate then keep on keeping on. Please, dont let your Valentines Day be forced. Love is love. And love is beautiful. It should be celebrated. Celebrated more than one day of the year. Celebrated for 365 days. More often, more ways. Find new ways to show love and appreciation. Keep loving. Love more people. So many people need love every day, not just one specific day of the year.
Love, Amy.
