jalapenos

The best recipe and emergency pit stops

It has gotten dry and warm in our neck of the woods.  Still “Florida humid” in the mornings, but we could use a sprinkle of rain.  I broke down and turned the air conditioning on.  We try to wait that out for as long as possible.  Ryan and I like a good challenge, even if it means we must suffer a bit.  The plan was to wait it out until May.  We made it.  I wanted to go longer but it was just so sticky in the house I gave up, couldn’t handle it anymore.  It was so humid, I swear the floors were sticky. but with the warmer weather, the garden is growing. While the garden is growing I am preparing for the best recipe.

New titles

My “salsa garden” is growing. Yes, I did start out calling it the “Oasis”.  And it is still a dreamy oasis, but when telling my mother-in-law about it she pointed out that all the things I have planted are for salsa making.   That didn’t even dawn on me.

The tomato plants have baby tomatoes growing, not ready for picking yet, but getting there.  Over the weekend the cucumber plants doubled in size.  I thought I was over watering them, as some of the leaves were turning yellow, but just like that, me leaving them alone, being gone for the weekend they doubled in size.

I was late to plant the jalapeno seeds.  They have yet to sprout. I expected to get plants that had already been started, but that fell through.  So coming in late to the salsa game, cross your fingers they come up are the jalapenos.  I found the best recipe for pickling those, and Ryan and I can not get enough of them.  I found the recipe in the Garden and Gun magazine.

The best recipe

If you haven’t got your hands on the Garden and Gun magazine, I highly recommend that you do. I love the articles, the images, and how the magazine represents the South.  The South is not all dirt, grime, and humidity – though I did just cry a little about the humidity.  The magazine celebrates the modern South and features the best in Southern food, style, travel, music, art, literature, and sporting culture.

I am inspired every time I read it. Inspired to build a better garden, make more green space, tidy things up and decorate.

This pickled jalapeno recipe is the easiest.  You guys have got to give it a try. Looking back for the link, I found that it is an exert form the editor. Not even a feature recipe in the magazine!

The emergency pit stop

On the way home Sunday I had a frantic, pullover immediately side of the road emergency pit stop.  Why can’t my bowels be normal?  I was bloated but didn’t think it was going to lead to a blowout.  But sure enough, I needed to go when nothing was in sight.  Actually, I thought I was going to be able to make it to the gas station a few miles up the road, but the urgency hit and I knew I couldn’t wait that long.

We were pulling a trailer and Ryan doesn’t like to pull off of the road with the trailer – I guess it is not safe.  But, I was in a panic and he is looking at me and I am looking at him, and I just need him to pull over!  He found a dirt road with plenty of room to turn the trailer around and got off the highway. WHEW. I wasn’t sure I could have held out any longer.

I was afraid I was going to have to ride in the bed of the truck the remainder of the way home had I soiled my pants.
