The crud is going around and it has been dreary weather here in the sunshine state. Almost a week of overcast, drizzling rain. Welcomed rain, as we have been in a bit of a drought in this area. But then the unwelcomed crud. It has breached the doors of the house and made its way in! UGH.
The doctor’s office is not where I like to spend my free time, so I can say I have not paid a doctor a visit. I would prefer to put that off if at all possible.
The current treatment is gargling with warm salt water, lots of hot tea and I have chicken in the crockpot for chicken soup. My favorite tea is earl gray with honey, but I do occasionally drink lemon ginger tea with honey too. I try to drink the lemon ginger tea when I am having an IBS flare with nausea and bloating. I cannot say that it provides any relief, but knowing that I am doing something that could help my symptoms eases my mind.
Dumps and trucks, but not dump-trucks.
Ryan’s truck would not start the other evening when he was leaving work so I went and picked him up, leaving the truck at his job. That meant he needed a ride to work the next morning. I got up early to drive him in so we wouldn’t have two vehicles sitting in his work parking lot. Problem is, mornings are not easy for me. Not that I’m not a morning person, it is just when my bowels are most active. I did not drink any coffee and only had toast for a quick breakfast to hopefully make the commute an accident free one. It worked for the most part. As we were leaving the house I had to make a quick pit stop at the bathroom. In which Ryan rolled his eyes standing at the back door waiting to leave.
The commute was accident free but as soon as we pulled in front of the building I HAD to go. It is like the body knows you are in the vicinity of a bathroom. What the body doesn’t know is the bathroom is up a flight of stairs. Ever sprint up a flight of stairs with your butt cheeks clenched together? No easy feat. I almost lost it.
Thanksgiving plans
The kick off of the holiday gatherings is approaching. Being prepared is the best way to deal with all the hub-bub. Prepared for what you are planning to bring to a party to how you are going to avoid your trigger foods and gracefully turn down Aunt Sally’s special dish. I have a blog post where I talk about Aunt Sally, you can find it here gutfeelings.blog/even-though-you-have-ibs-you-can-stomach-the-holidays-gastric-distress/
The date for thanksgiving in my family made a change years ago, something of my Grandmas doing. And something I think only grandmas can do, change dates of holidays. We gather the weekend before the actual holiday. It is a great plan and we still honor this date change even though grandma passed away over 20 years ago. One side of the family gets to send time with you, with no rush to get elsewhere and no having to eat two meals and stuffing yourself. Then on the actual day of thanksgiving you can go visit the other side of the family and enjoy the day, have a meal and not have to rush to get out the door.
Work on keeping the holidays crud free
Wash your hands. Practice good hygiene. Warm water, soap, sing that row, row, row your boat song. I am a person who is constantly touching my face. Yup! This is a bad habit and will take time to break. I know I am picking up the crud causing germs and introducing them right into my face. I rest my chin on my fist, I scratch my nose. When I move my hair out of my face – contact again.
You should know that anything that is touched by a sick family member, such as the remote control, hand towels, door handles, and car keys could potentially have germs on it. Some types of cold viruses can live on objects for days, so a thorough cleaning of anything that could be shared by family members is essential.
Holiday healthy check list
- wash your hands
- dont touch your face
- hydrate – this is always important
- dont over eat
- you can say no
- enjoy this time with your people
