I often like to make a homemade pizza for Friday dinner.  It is like a kick-off of the weekend, end of the week treat.  I put the ingredients for the dough in the bread maker and it does the hard work.  When it is time, and the dough is big and looks as if it is going to pour out of the bread machine bowl I take it out, punch it down and put together a pizza. What do they say, easy peasy lemon squeezy? Unless you have celiac disease. Then there is no easy peasy nothing.

homemade pizza and celiac disease don't mix

Everything was going fine, homemade pizza equals happiness. Until it didn’t, we ate the pizza and drank some coffee. Then, my belly bloated something serious. I unbuttoned my pants.  That did help, but the bloat was still present.  It was an absolute discomfort. I had the thought that once I went to bed and could do my side-laying trick, I could ease the gas out and would soon be feeling better. Not the case here.  I am not sure what happened or what went wrong.

Celiac disease

Pizza has not brought me this much discomfort ever in the past.  Now I am worried.  Is there a celiac problem?  My nephew has been diagnosed with celiac disease. Is this something that I am now going to have a problem with?

I eat a lot of pasta and don’t have any problems there.  I also eat white bread.  People act like white bread is the devil.  NO NUTRIENTS! It is so bad for you!!  Okay, I hear you. But I like it. So I eat it occasionally.  I like to make an open-face egg sandwich for lunch (hold the mayonnaise – ugh). It is more of just breakfast stacked on itself.  The base is the (white bread) toast, then egg, cheese, bacon, onion, and tomato if I have one.

I do not have any digestion problems on my pasta and white bread days.

Eeny, Meeny, miny, moe

Could the “pizza bloat” have been caused by the sauce and not the dough? I am not ruling out pizza. I am not ruling out sauce. Or pepperoni. UGH. Having digestion issues is the worst.  And having to try to determine the root cause of the digestion problems is a problem in itself. The night with the belly bloat and the pizza, I don’t believe I slept a wink.  My stomach gurgled all night and I was nauseous. It was one of those nights where I lay in bed and just wished for morning to hurry up.  Because with the morning, I know my body is ready to dispel whatever is causing the issue.

That is something I can count on.  The morning bowel movements. I don’t always look forward to them, but I know they bring relief to some of the uncomfortable IBS symptoms I face.  So, as much as they are not welcome, they are welcome.

I have thought on the subject of my IBS symptoms.  Mostly my daily diarrhea.  I know it is weird.  Do others ponder on their bowel movements? Maybe if they are as frequent as mine, they do or would. If I could rid of some of my symptoms and have to keep some of my symptoms, which ones would go and which ones would I keep?  Let me remind you, I DON’T want to keep any of them, I am just sorting the lesser of the evils.

I would get rid of the nausea and bloat and keep the daily diarrhea.  When I say that out loud, I think who in their right mind would go that way? That would be me. The diarrhea is not convenient but it causes me no pain.  Sometimes a little embarrassment but the pain is minimal.  The bloat is miserable and the same goes for the nausea.

In time I will determine what part of the pizza is the problem. Then that food item will go on my can not eat list.

Does anyone else suffer from Celiac disease?

Can you just take a pill for the symptoms you face? I have a friend that does that.

What IBS symptom of yours do you hate the most?
