The other day, I forgot my laptop and thought the world was standing still. Who would have ever thought I would go into such a tailspin without the thing? I didn’t realize I was using it as much as I am. I need it for daily things. To write my blog and apply to jobs, it is the only device that has my resume on it. I plugged up the old desktop computer and typed the blog on that version of Word to later then transfer it to the blog when I got the laptop back. I know I have dissed the internet before (social media mostly) but there is value in the internet.

Whoa, that was archaic. It was the Word version from the early 2000s. That doesn’t feel like that long ago for me, but yeah, it was 20 years ago. That was the time when there were no smartphones and we didn’t text. I mean, you could text with some effort. If you did text you had to use the method of “multi-tap.” Each number on the phone is connected to three or four letters and you had to tap through the number to get to the letter you wanted to use. It took forever. You could get good at it if you text a lot. I did not care to get good at it, therefore I didn’t do much texting.
Things have changed so much with the internet at one’s fingertips. It is not all good, but it is not all bad either. Growing up if you needed to write a paper you would have to go to the library and do research using the encyclopedias and research material there. There wasn’t this new artificial intelligence writing papers for you. You actually had to learn something, which to me is good. Might have been painful at the time, staked out at the library for hours going through books and writing down all the valuable information that you read. But you were learning. This forced you to retain things.
Value in the internet – it saved a frogs life
I like the internet at my fingertips. For instance, I just saw a weird frog and wasn’t sure if he was invasive or a native Florida frog. I believe in disposing of the invasives to protect our natural environment. I did a quick Google search of Florida frogs and found a good page to help me determine to let him live—lucky guy for the internet in my hands.
More useful internet
Another useful internet at my fingertips this morning, my dog, Crowder Boy has these skin bumps – again. Last time he had these bumps, with some internet googling I was able to determine he had a skin infection and would benefit from the help of some antibiotics.
I have a stash of antibiotics from the other dog going to the vet so with some research I was able to determine which one to give him for the skin infection. I know a vet would tell me to go to the vet, but I have this medicine on hand, and with the internet, we can start him on his way to getting better. Also with the direction of the spousal unit, Crowder Boy is going to need a bath after he has been rolling around at the beach all weekend.
Do any of you use the internet for research? To help combat invasive species? Or treat your animals and even yourself? The internet can provide so much good when used for good. It provides a wealth of knowledge and surplus information. It connects you with items and services you might not be able to get in the area you live in. Even though I get upset about social media I have to admit there value in the overall internet.
