You should enjoy a space when you spend an ample amount of time in that space. Right? I think so, therefore that leads me to want to repaint our half bathroom. There is nothing wrong with the current color other than me wanting to change things up. but I need to find an inexpensive way to change things up.
I guess one could say I have been changing things up for a few months now. With the quitting of my job and being in the house all day, I see things that need updating. Or maybe I should say I see things that I want to update. The biggest problem here is that I have no income so spending money is not a thing.
I have done small updates. Things I could repaint. I painted the fish tank stand. I have always hated the fish tank stand. It is bulky and a golden oak color. It is out of date. I have wished the fish would die so I could just get rid of the whole deal. That sounds terrible, doesn’t it?
I decided when I woke up one Thursday morning that that would be the day I conquered the ugly fish tank. It would be a whole undertaking. Starting with draining the tank, to relocating Mr. Plecko for the day just so I could get the stand outside to do my work.
It is a 20-something-gallon fish tank, so that took a lot of trips to dump water and keep some water for Mr. Plecko. This equated to lots of buckets in the living room and a lot of water on the floor. Once the fish tank was finally empty and manageable, I moved the stand outside.

Fun stuff change up
Now for the fun stuff. I built a base for it so it could be raised off the floor, to give it a more elegant streamlined look. And then, I painted it black. Once it was back in the house I gave it some gold cabinet door handles. Which broke up the flatness of the dark black and made it pop.
I threw away a box of dry rotted fish tank junk that had been sitting in the cabinet for who knows how long. Okay, I do know how long. It has been there since we moved and that has been 12 years now. I didn’t even know what was in there at this point. But you know I like to purge, so I jumped on that opportunity.

Finally the refilling of the tank, which seemed to take forever with even more water on the floor. By the end of the day, Mr. Plecko was back in his house. Clean and revamped. And I love it.
I wonder why it took me so long to finally do something about my dread of the fish tank décor. But then I realized, overall it was a big job, with the draining and refilling of the water. If that wasn’t needed it would have been fairly quick and easy. It is no longer an eyesore to me.
Determined to change it
So, does this lead me to the half-bathroom repaint, and spring spruce up? I think that is a definite yes. But I need to decide on a color. Currently, it is a calming sage green. Which I am not against, it pairs nicely with the lighter wood tones in the room. But, I am in this paint everything dark phase. Moody dark colors.
Quite possibly that is just where I am right now.
I want to go black. I am a Benjamin Moore paint fan. So I need to look at the Benjamin Moore black paint palette. I have learned that one is either, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore or Behr. It is like you got to pick a team and stick with them. I do worry. Will it be too dark? It is a small room, closet-like, with no windows. On the blueprints for the house, it was supposed to be the air handler room. So, imagine that – small.
Ugh. I want bold, daring, and moody. It has light wood, so that should offset the dark paint. This is me convincing myself.
Do you guys have a small bathroom? What is the vibe there?
Ever painted something and NOT loved it?
