fiber gummies are working

I get excited when I think something is working, like these Metamucil gummies.  I believe they are helping relieve my IBS symptoms. I hesitate to say they are as it hasn’t been a full week of taking them but I feel so much better than I did at this point last week. I didn’t think adding fiber and IBS was going to be the answer.

Last week I has having an IBS flare and almost crapped my pants taking a walk around the in-law’s neighborhood. So, yeah, I think one would say I am in better place this week.

Bristol Stool Chart

This is an IBS blog, so we are going to go here. Have you guys looked at the Bristol stool chart?  At one point I downloaded a Bristol stool app to track my bowel movements.  Then I asked myself why.  Nothing was going to change, I was just going to have a record of my diarrhea.

But really guys, since taking these gummies it has changed.  I went from a 7 to a 5. This is a big deal to me.

The bottle did say that it would get worse before it got better. Well, it didn’t word it like that, but it did say to expect some bloating and gas. It promised and delivered. I didn’t bloat and get gassy until the evenings. The first night (and maybe I took too many gummies out of the gate, should have gone slower) it was a bad bloat followed by very bad and excessive gas.

Fiber and IBS

Ryan advised I should ease into the gummies as he was witness to the gas situation.  He was right, as he often is with my excessiveness. Often jumping in with more isn’t always better. I need him to slow me down sometimes.

They say soluble fiber can help with IBS-D by removing excess fluid and helping with diarrhea. Soluble fiber stays in the gut longer, which helps the colon work normally. The thought of adding fiber scared me. I have always heard that you need fiber when you are constipated – not a problem of mine. So in my mind, adding fiber would make me go more.

Although, my brain is wired to think one way, science is proving it wrong. I will run with that and see how long this lasts.
